A Night Train to the Coast

Last summer Marta decided to travel from the city to the coast by night train instead of flying. She had always taken planes before, but she wanted to save money and see the countryside.\n\nThe train left at ten o'clock in the evening. Marta found her small bed, called a couchette, and shared the compartment with three other travellers. At first she felt a little nervous because she did not know them, but soon they were chatting about their holidays and laughing together.\n\nDuring the night the train stopped several times at quiet stations. Marta could not sleep very well because the seats were narrow, but she did not mind. She watched the dark fields and the lights of distant villages passing by the window.\n\nWhen morning came, she opened the curtain and saw the blue sea for the first time. The journey had taken almost nine hours, much longer than a flight, but Marta felt relaxed and happy. She had spent less money, met friendly people, and arrived without the stress of a busy airport. Next year, she promised herself, she would travel by train again.
