The Community Garden

When Mr Owusu retired, he found that he had too much free time. He had worked as a bus driver for thirty years, and suddenly his days felt empty. His daughter suggested that he should find a hobby, but nothing seemed right.\n\nOne afternoon he noticed a piece of waste ground at the end of his street. It was full of weeds and old rubbish, and nobody used it. Mr Owusu had an idea: why not turn it into a community garden where neighbours could grow vegetables together?\n\nAt first only two families joined him. They cleared the rubbish, dug the soil, and planted carrots, beans, and tomatoes. Slowly, more people became curious. A retired teacher offered to plant flowers, and some children started growing strawberries in old wooden boxes.\n\nThe garden changed the street in a way nobody expected. People who had lived next to each other for years but never spoken now met every weekend. They shared seeds, advice, and cups of tea. Mr Owusu no longer felt that his days were empty. He often said that the best thing he had grown in the garden was not the vegetables, but the friendships between his neighbours.
