Emma comes from Bristol. Last summer she stayed with her friend Olia's family in Vinnytsia for two weeks. Every day she tried new Ukrainian dishes, and now she loves them.
Her favourite dish is borshch. It is a red soup with beetroot, cabbage, and meat. Olia's grandmother served it with sour cream and dark bread with garlic. "It looks simple, but it tastes amazing," says Emma.
Emma also liked varenyky — small pockets of soft dough with a filling inside. You can eat them with potato, cheese, meat, or even cherries. Sweet varenyky with cherries were her favourite.
One evening the family made deruny — potato pancakes with sour cream. They are similar to hash browns in Britain, but Emma thinks deruny are tastier. Next summer she is going to visit Olia again and learn to cook these dishes herself.
