Ukrainian Christmas Traditions
Christmas is a very special holiday in Ukraine. In 2023, Ukraine moved Christmas to 25 December, and now Ukrainians officially celebrate it on that day. The evening before Christmas is called Sviatvechir — Christmas Eve. On this evening families cook twelve dishes for a big supper. The most important dish is kutia — a sweet dish with wheat, poppy seeds, honey, and nuts. The supper starts when the first star appears in the sky.
After supper, people sing kolyadky — traditional Ukrainian Christmas songs. Children and adults go from house to house, sing for their neighbours, and get sweets or some money.
Last year Sofiia's family celebrated Christmas at her grandmother's house in Ternopil. Her grandmother cooked all twelve dishes, and Sofiia helped her to make kutia. "Next year we are going to invite our cousins from Lutsk," says Sofiia. "Christmas is better when the family is big."
