The USA in Brief
The United States of America, or simply the USA, is a huge country which consists of fifty states. Each state has its own laws, its own flag, and even its own nickname. Many people believe that New York is the capital, but this is a famous mistake. The capital is Washington, DC — a much smaller city which was specially built for the government. The letters DC stand for District of Columbia: this district does not belong to any of the fifty states. New York is simply the largest city in the country.
The American flag is known as the Stars and Stripes. It has fifty stars — one for each state — and thirteen stripes, which represent the thirteen colonies that started the country. Another famous symbol is the bald eagle, a large bird which appears on official documents and coins.
The most recognisable American monument is probably the Statue of Liberty, which stands on an island in New York harbour. Surprisingly, it was not made in America: the statue was a gift from France. The White House, where the president lives and works, is not in New York either — it is in Washington, of course.
