Australia and New Zealand

Australia and New Zealand lie in the Southern Hemisphere, on the opposite side of the planet from Ukraine. Because of this, their seasons are reversed: when it is winter in Kyiv, it is summer in Sydney. Christmas there falls in the middle of summer, and many families celebrate it on the beach.

Almost everyone knows Sydney, with its famous opera house, so many people are surprised to learn that it is not the capital of Australia. The capital is Canberra, a much smaller city which was specially planned and built for this role. Australia is also famous for animals which are found nowhere else in the world. The kangaroo and the koala carry their babies in a pouch — a warm pocket on the mother's body.

New Zealand, Australia's neighbour, consists of two main islands. Here, too, the capital is not the largest city: the biggest city is Auckland, while the capital is Wellington. The national symbol of New Zealand is the kiwi, a small bird which cannot fly. New Zealanders love this bird so much that they often call themselves Kiwis.
