Scotland and Its Symbols
Scotland is one of the four countries of the United Kingdom and occupies the north of the island of Great Britain. Its capital is Edinburgh, a beautiful old city built around a castle on a high rock. Every August the city hosts a famous arts festival, and its streets fill with actors, musicians, and tourists from all over the world. The largest Scottish city, however, is not Edinburgh but Glasgow.
Scotland is easy to recognise by its symbols. The kilt is a traditional piece of clothing for men which looks like a skirt. It is made of tartan — a woollen cloth with a special pattern of coloured squares. In the past, each Scottish clan, or large family, had its own tartan. Another famous symbol is the bagpipes, a loud musical instrument which is often played at weddings and parades.
In Scotland a lake is called a loch. The most famous one is Loch Ness, a long, deep lake in the north. According to a popular legend, a monster called Nessie lives in its dark water, although nobody has ever proved it. The national flower of Scotland is the thistle — a prickly purple plant which has decorated Scottish coins for centuries.
