Christmas in Britain
Christmas is the biggest family holiday of the year in Britain, and it comes with traditions that often surprise foreign visitors. Presents are opened on the morning of 25 December, and the main event is Christmas dinner: roast turkey with potatoes and vegetables, followed by Christmas pudding — a dark, heavy dessert which is often served burning, after they pour brandy over it and light it.
No British Christmas table is complete without crackers. A cracker is a colourful paper tube which two people pull apart with a loud bang. Inside there is a paper crown, a tiny toy, and a joke that is usually so bad that everyone laughs anyway. Wearing the paper crown during dinner is part of the fun, even for serious grandparents.
The day after Christmas, 26 December, is called Boxing Day. It is a public holiday, and many families spend it watching football, walking off the enormous dinner, or hunting for bargains in the sales.
Ukrainians who have experienced a British Christmas often notice one big difference: in Ukraine the most important meal is the rich Christmas Eve supper, while in Britain everything centres on Christmas Day itself.
