The United Kingdom: Four Countries, One State

Many learners use the words England, Great Britain, and the United Kingdom as if they meant the same thing, but they don't. The United Kingdom is a state which consists of four countries: England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Great Britain is simply the name of the largest island, which is shared by England, Scotland, and Wales — so Northern Ireland is part of the UK, but not part of Great Britain.

Each country has its own capital: London, Edinburgh, Cardiff, and Belfast. Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland also have their own parliaments or assemblies, which make decisions about local matters such as education and health. Each of the four countries even has its own national football team.

The UK flag, which is known as the Union Jack, was created by combining three crosses: the red cross of St George for England, the white diagonal cross of St Andrew for Scotland, and the red diagonal cross of St Patrick for Ireland. Wales is not represented on the flag at all, although the Welsh flag itself — a red dragon on a green and white background — is one of the most striking flags in Europe. This mix of nations explains why many British people describe themselves as Scottish, Welsh, or English first, and British second.
